The Vicphysics Teachers' Network is exploring the idea of setting up a library of physics equipment from which teachers could borrow to do demonstrations.
A survey has been developed to learn how Physics teachers might benefit from such an equipment library for short term use in classrooms. This survey aims to gain feedback from teachers' use of resources in the classroom and determine the most appropriate age groups and physics topics to target in the development of an equipment lending library.
Survey data would also be instrumental in supporting future grant applications for the establishment of the Equipment Library. We encourage you to take a few minutes over the next few weeks to complete this survey.
This survey can be accessed at here.
Any queries regarding the survey or the Equipment Library initiative can be directed to physics demo library.
The Vicphysics Teachers' Network Inc. has developed lists of equipment needed to teach the various topics of the VCE Physics Study Design. The catalyst for this task was similar lists compiled for UK Schools by SCORE (Science Community Representing Education).
SCORE's partners include The Royal Society, the Association for Science Education (ASE), the Institute of Physics (IOP), The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Society of Biology. SCORE has produced 'a set of resourcing benchmarks for teachers and school practitioners to use when planning science budgets and equipping classrooms'. Click here to access their bench marks.
Our equipment lists have the following column headings:
|Item||Ancillary equipment||IT option|
|Essential||Desirable||Shared between schools|
|Single item||Class set||Years 7 - 10|
The Excel file had worksheets for:
|Electricity and Magnetism||Motion||Thermodynamics|
An Excel file of suggested equipment to teach physics topics in Years 7 - 10 and VCE Physics. The list has been compiled by the Vicphysics Teachers' Network Inc..
Vicphysics Teachers' Network Inc. is unable to continue the Equipment Grants Scheme at this stage.
Vicphysics Teachers' Network Inc. plans to use some of its funds to provide essential physics equipment to under-resourced schools with negligible equipment budgets. Grants will be made twice each year: at the end of Term 1 and at the beginning of term 4.
Schools will need to send the application form by the second Friday in March for the first round, or by the end of the first week in term 4 for the second round unless otherwise as stated below, either by email to the committee with subject 'Equipment Grant: Application' or post to Physics Equipment Grant, Vicphysics Teachers' Network Inc., PO Box 290, Flinders Lane, VIC 8009. Any queries can be sent to the committee by the email link above.
- At least one teacher currently at the school must have attended either the current year's Physics Teachers' Conference or the previous year's conference, or have enrolled for the following year's conference.
- Teacher's name and contact details
- School's name, address and contact details
- Physics student numbers for Years 11 and 12, male and female, for the current and previous two years,
