What does the Forum offer?, What are email digests?, How do I change the frequency of the digests?, How do I get instant notification of new postings?, What frequencies of digests are available?
This Forum enables you to seek advice, offer assistance, express an opinion and participate in discussions on a range of topics related to physics teaching, or just read the exchange and pick up the good ideas. The topics are i) Curriculum Matters, ii) Comments on VCE Exams, iii) Teaching Issues, iv) Practical Concerns, v) Content Queries and vi) Planning Decisions.
To receive the contributions or make one yourself, you need to register with a username and password. Registrations need to be confirmed by the Forum Manager who normally logs daily. If your email address is a school-based one, then acceptance is automatic. If either an applicant's email address or their username raises a question about their bona fides, then some checking will be done prior to acceptance.
Email digests are a way of staying informed on different topics and the threads within each topic. When you register you have the default setting of a daily email digest of any new postings.
Select a topic, then click the 'Forum Tools' link above the list of threads. Select 'Unsubscribe to This Forum'. This will cancel the default subscription. Now got to 'Forum Tools' again and select 'Subscribe to This Forum'. You will then have the option to choose either daily, weekly or no notification for this topic. If you wish to change the frequency for other topics, each will need to modified as described here.
Instant notification is only available for individual threads, not for a whole topic. If you want instant notification to a particular thread, for example, 'The 2012 June VCE Exam', rather than waiting for the daily digest, you can change the subscription to that thread. Select the thread, then click the 'Thread Tools' link at the top of the list of posts. Click 'Subscribe to this Thread'. You can then choose 'instant notification' from the list of modes available.
There are a number of different frequencies available.
- No Email Notification - lists the subscription in your User CP only. You do not receive any notifications about new posts or threads in the topic.
- Daily Email Notification - sends one email a day with the new and updated threads in the topic. If there are no new or updated threads in the topic then you will not receive an email.
- Weekly Email Notification - sends one email per week in the same way as the Daily Email Notification.
Thread Subscriptions have the same options as subscriptions with the following additional option:
- Instant Email Notification - sends an email as soon as a new post is added to the thread. This is not sent for every reply and will only be sent once until you revisit the topic.
How do I manage Subscriptions and Folders?
You can modify how you are notified about updates at any time - for example by having them listed in your control panel (User CP) and receiving email updates for each one. This will allow you to respond more promptly to someone's post(s).
Thread subscriptions can be sorted into folders for easy management. You can create as many folders as you wish by going to 'Edit Folders' in the 'Subscribed Threads' section of your User CP. To add a new folder, enter the folder name into one of the blank boxes and save the page. To delete a folder, delete the folder name. Editing a folder is done by simply editing the folder name in the list.
You can also manage your individual subscriptions by clicking 'List Subscriptions' under 'Subscribed Threads' in your User CP. Here you can select which subscriptions you wish to manage and delete them, move them to another folder, or change their subscription type.
Topic subscriptions are not managed through the List Subscriptions page and are shown on the User CP page where they contain the option to unsubscribe from the topic.
