Support for New Physics Teachers: In-Services and a Mentor Scheme

The AIP Education Committee is keen to assist new physics teachers whether they are:

  • a) First Year Outs,
  • b) Teachers returning to Physics teaching after many years’ absence, or
  • c) Teachers who have been asked by their school to take physics.

It offers two events:

The in-service program consists of a half-day in-service on a Saturday morning in late February or early March and a full day in-service on the first Monday of ther school holidays. The two events are free and travel coverage is available for country participants. The two events are complementary, so people can come to both.

To register please email the AIP with subject “Registration: New Physics Teachers” and include in the email, not only your contact details, but your reason for applying and which events you are applying for.

Check resources for material prepared for the 2010 events.

The Mentor Scheme. Several retired physics teachers have offered their services to support new teachers. The AIP Education Committee gives them a stipend to meet with the teacher once during Terms 2, 3 and 4 and to be available for phone and email contact. Teachers wishing to participate in this scheme should send an expression of interest containing their contact details and a statement of why they want to be involved in the scheme. The expression of interest should be accompanied by a letter of support from the Science Coordinator of the School Principal. The documents should be either posted to the AIP mentor Scheme, PO Box 304, Glen Waverley, VIC 3150. Schools are welcome to fund additional support from the mentor.

Teacher Action on Climate Change

The AIP (Vic Branch) Education Committee has established an initiative "Science Teachers for Climate Awareness". The purpose of which is to raise the awareness of the voting public, starting with your teaching colleagues at your school, and then the parent body, and other community groups. The Education Committee has developed a presentation package for you to use. All you need to have a willingness to be involved.

The information day was held on Monday 29th March at Kew High School. The next information day is likely to be held on Monday 20th September.

Medical Physics In-Services at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

Participants hear from practitioners in the field as well as see the medical technology. The in-service runs from 10:30am until 12:30 on a Saturday morning. There is no cost, but you must register as there is a limit of 20 participants. The program features a one hour talk on:

  • the physics aspects of the effect of radiation on the human body and of the medical technology at Peter Mac,
  • how the technology is used in diagnosis and treatment, as well as
  • information on the training and career paths associated with medical physics.

The second hour will be an extensive tour of the facilities at Peter Mac.

The In-services are usually held early in December each year.

Monthly Lectures of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Institute of Physics

The lectures are usually held at the University of Melbourne usually at 6:30pm on the third Thursday of the month. Click here for program details and flyers.

Monthly Meetings of the AIP (Vic Branch) Education Committee

This year the AIP Education Committee meets at Kew High School normally on the second Tuesday of the month from 5pm – 7pm. The meetings are open to any physics teacher, if you would like to attend any meeting, please email the chair, Sue Grant.

Australian Student Mineral Venture (ASMV)

The annual Southern ASMV is open to students who are currently in Years 10, 11 or 12 in any school in southern Australia. The primary target group are students in years 10 and 11 although year 12 applicants with a clear interest in the mining industry will also be considered. Current Year 12 students would need to tell advise what course/s they are considering post-school.

The ASMV is a twelve day tour of Victoria and Tasmania (Dates in 2010: 9th - 20th January) visiting minesites, mineral processing plants, geological locations, research laboratories and university facilities. The aim is to introduce students to professional careers within the minerals industry, and of course, to promote the corresponding courses on offer through the School of Science and Engineering at University of Ballarat and other Australian universities. Students meet and spend time onsite with metallurgists, geologists, engineers and environmental scientists. They will have an opportunity to talk to these people about their responsibilities, training and career paths and in so doing, gain an invaluable insight into each role.

Check here for details. The cost per student for the 2010 event was $385, although an inability to pay this must not deter any student from applying. Applications close in late September.

Workshop on 'Materals and their use in structures'

The University of Ballarat runs workshops for students from late March until early June each year. Check Materials page for Information sheet and booking form.
