Girls in Physics Breakfasts Speaker Application
A series of Girls in Physics Breakfasts are being organised for 2022. They will be held over the months from March to June. The events are for girls in Years 10 – 12.
There will be one event in Melbourne and several events in regional Victoria, at Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Warrnambool, Wodonga, Mildura and Gippsland.
We invite women in physics or engineering to apply to be the keynote speaker at one or more of these breakfasts.
At each breakfast, the students will be seated at tables with students from other schools. At each table there will be two or three women, either at university or in a career in physics or engineering. Over breakfast, the students can query them about their life and work.
The events will start at 7:30am and finish at 10:00am with about 45 minutes speaking time in the second half followed by time for questions.
The purpose of the events is to not only give the students an insight into an aspect of physics or a technology through your current research, but also to give them an appreciation of the range of careers that are on offer from studying physics. For this reason, the events are scheduled in the first half of the year to principally target Year 10 students before they make decisions about their subject choices for Year 11. The events will also be open to students from Years 11 and 12.
Speakers will be paid for the speaking engagement(s) and travel and accommodation expenses will also be covered.
The dates of the breakfasts are flexible and will be determined by the preferences of the selected speakers.
There is no restraint on the choice of topic, but it should be of interest to both the students and the women in attendance. You can check the list of previous breakfasts to get a sense of the diversity of topics that have been presented so far.
If you would like to be involved, please complete the details below or email them to Vicphysics.
The closing date is Friday, 28th January, 2022, with appointments expected to be made by early February.
