IYPT – Aust

International Young Physicists Tournament (Aust)

A competition to select a national team to compete at the IYPT 2026 to be held in Zurich in July 2026.

This year over the weekend immediately after PHYSCON 2026, John Monash Science School will be hosting a national tournament to select the Australian team to participate in the IYPT in Zurich from 5th to 12th July.

Last year schools were invited to nominate teams, each of up to four students. There are 13 teams registered.

This event is similar to VYPT that VicPhysics ran a few years ago.

Each team will have experimentally investigated a few topics drawn from a list of 17 topics. In February, see dates below, the teams compete against other teams in what are called’ ‘Physics Fights’. In each Physics Fight one team reports on an investigation with a 12 min presentation and another team critiques the presentation. A Physics Fight lasts for a maximum of 45 minutes with maximum times for the various sections. A description of the sections and times can be found here.

For more details of the event, please click here.

Venue: John Monash Science School, Clayton Campus, Monash University.

Dates: Friday, 20th to Sunday, 22nd February

Times: Friday: 3:00pm to 7:30pm, dinner provided. Saturday: 9:00am to 7:00pm, lunch and dinner provided. Sunday: 9:00am to 1:30pm, lunch provided. Click here for more details.

Seeking teachers to be on judging panels for this Weekend Event

There are judging panels of at least three for each contest. So many people are needed to help with the judging over the three days. Even coming to one of the four sessions will be of value.

So if you would like to help out and as well get some ideas on practical investigations and catch up with colleagues, please contact the organiser at JMSS, Alex Gavrilescu .

The IYPT has a long history (38 years) so there is extensive range of resources on their website, for example guidelines for teams and jury members, and scoresheets with guides.

To get an idea of some of the presentations, this Youtube link has three 12 min presentations from some recent IYPT grand finals. This Youtube video (16 min) was made, by Ajarn Wittaya Kanchanapusakit, to prepare the IYPT participants (of team Thailand) for the presentation part of the competition.
