IT Applications
Planet Spreadsheet 23.6 kB xls
Planet Documentation 10.2 kB rtf
An Excel Spreadsheet ‘Planet’ contains radius and period data of the moons of the solar system. This documentation contains a set of tasks and questions for the Excel spreadsheet. The students investigate how the moons’ velocities and accelerations vary with distance from the planet. Values for R cubed /T squared can be obtained for each planet and subsequently the mass of each planet determined.
Gravitational Field
[administrator notice: content below memberonly ]
Unit 3 Fields: The Gravitational Field
This Area of Study looks at three fields: Gravitational, Electric and Magnetic. Resources for the other fields are available at Electric Field and Magnetic Field.
Relevant items from the 20 years of Vicphysics Newsletters
The titles of the relevant items are listed at the bottom of this webpage, each with a number code. There is also a link to the full compendium of newsletter items where the number code can be used to locate the item.
Resources coming from teachers
Most of the other resources on this website have come from teachers who prepared material or found a link that works well with their students. There is much of value here, but as content and technology change there is a need to keep the resources up to date. So if you have a idea you wish to share, please enter details here.

Teaching Advanced Physics: Fields
‘Teaching Advanced Physics’ is a UK resource for teachers new to teaching physics. It assumes only a limited access to equipment, resources, and advice from experienced colleagues. The section on Fields covers Gravitational and Electrical Fields and Electromagnetism. It consists of 16 episodes, each of which is for one or two 60 min lessons. Content of each episode is a lesson plan with a description of the content covered, with points to emphasise in discussion, along with activity or question sheets for the students.
Fields resources from Perimeter Institute
This is an inquiry-based educational resource focused on establishing the reality of electric, magnetic, and gravitational fields. The video features researchers discussing the central role that fields play in modern physics. Activities begin with an exploration of the nature of fields and the models that describe them.

Useful Websites
3D real time tracking of satellites
This new software uploads the current positions of satellites and display them around a 3D image of the earth. The image can be tilted and rotated. Individual orbits can be shown by selecting a dot. Enter the name of a satellite and ts orbital data is displayed. It is not as powerful as the old J-Track from NASA which is not available anymore, but it is still impressive and shows the ring of geostationary satellites.
