PD on SACs in 2026

Dates: After school program over two days – Thurs, 30th April, Thurs, 7th May
Times: 5:00pm to 6:30pm, 2 x 45 min sessions, each day
Venue: Both days are on-line only.
Cost: None
Purpose: The revised Study Design for 2023 – 2027 has a significant change in how the assessment tasks are designed. There are only four formats and each must be selected once across Units 3 and 4 for the four Areas of Study. The Unit 4 Practical Investigation has its own format.
You choose the format to assess each Outcome Statement.
The formats are listed here.

A.Explaining: Application of physics concepts to explain a model, theory, device, design or innovation.
B.Analysing: Analysis and evaluation of primary and/or secondary data, including data plotting, identified assumptions or data limitations, and conclusions.
C.Applying: Problem-solving, applying physics concepts and skills to real-world contexts.
D. Comparing: Comparison and evaluation of two solutions to a problem, two explanations of a physics phenomenon or concept, or two methods and/or findings from practical activities.

By the end of Term 1 you will have completed one assessment task with one of these formats, with three more tasks later in the year with the other three formats.

The PD will enable teachers:
• to share their experience of using one of the formats for assessment tasks so far this year and
• to learn from the experiences of others for developing tasks for the other three formats yet to be used.

When you register below you will be asked to complete a table on the format of the assessment task that you have completed so far and your tentative choices for the other three.

Program Over the two afternoons, there will be four sessions, one for each Area of Study, other than the Prac investigation. In each session you will be working in breakout rooms based on the format you have nominated for the assessment task for that Area of Study. For example, in the first session on Motion in 2D, there will be four breakout rooms for Explaining, Analysing, Applying and Comparing.
You are also invited to share your assessment tasks, either in the breakout room, or to add to the google drive with the other tasks from last year’s PD, see information below.
Resources from the last year’s PD

  • Questions for the groups on the Motion in 2D and Fields Areas of Study which participants had already done and questions on Electricity Generation and Unit 4 AoS 1 which most participants were yet to do or design.
  • A short Powerpoint (5 slides) on the key pointers for each format,
  • A Spreadsheet of Performance Descriptors for the Areas of Study and the skills of Communication, Data Analysis and Arguments and Conclusions, along with information on constructing a rubric for an assessment task from the worksheets in the spreadsheet.
  • Check lists for each format Vicphysics has prepared these to assist teachers in thinking of the aspects of each type of assessment task. The check lists are not intended to be exhaustive, nor authoritative, but more a guide to the aspects worth considering when designing an assessment task or evaluating commercial tasks or those of other teachers.
  • Notes on Comparing and Analysing formats for all AOS These are the notes from the groups who used the ‘Comparing’ and ‘Analysing’ formats for the Areas of Study in Unit 3 and from the groups who plan to use the formats for Unit 4 Area of study 1.
There were quite a lot of useful ideas raised during the discussion.

Access to SACs submitted by participants at last year’s PD
After last year’s PD teachers were invited to submit the SACs to be shared with other teachers. Many were received. Any identification was removed, saved as pdf and uploaded to a google drive.

You can access this google drive by emailing Vicphysics from a school or education-linked email address and that address will be added to those with viewing rights.

You can add this year’s SACs to the google drive by emailing it to the above address.
