Synchrotron Tunnel Tour 4th May

The Australian Synchrotron is kindly offering teachers a tour of the storage ring tunnel during a scheduled operational shutdown.

The tour is on Monday, 4th May starting at 4:00pm and is expected to last one hour.

During the walk through the tunnel teachers will see the bending magnets, RF cavities to top up the electron energy and multipole magnets for focussing. Synchrotron scientists will be the tour guides and they are willing to answer your questions.

There are a few health conditions that prohibit entry into the tunnels due to the presence of magnetic fields, and visitors are required to wear close-toed shoes. Additionally, you will need to be able-bodied enough to go up and down several sets of stairs and stand for approximately 1 hour. Please read the synchrotron’s visitor safety guide, taking note of the “Personal Health Condition” and “Suitable Attire” requirements.

If bookings exceed the limit of 20, another tour will be organised on 11th May. For teachers in regional areas, there is another operational shutdown scheduled from late Dec to mid January, if you are interested in a tour at the time please contact VicPhysics. A tentative date is 18th January.
