Purpose: The revised Study Design for 2023 – 2027 has a significant change in how the assessment tasks are designed. There are only four formats and each must be selected once across Units 3 and 4 for the four Areas of Study. The Unit 4 Practical Investigation has its own format.
You choose the format to assess each Outcome Statement. The formats are listed here.
| A. | Explaining: Application of physics concepts to explain a model, theory, device, design or innovation. |
| B. | Analysing: Analysis and evaluation of primary and/or secondary data, including data plotting, identified assumptions or data limitations, and conclusions. |
| C. | Applying: Problem-solving, applying physics concepts and skills to real-world contexts. |
| D. | Comparing: Comparison and evaluation of two solutions to a problem, two explanations of a physics phenomenon or concept, or two methods and/or findings from practical activities. |
By June, you are likely to have completed two assessment tasks with two of these formats, with two more tasks later in the year with the other two formats.
The PD enabled teachers:
• to share their experience of using two of the formats for assessment tasks so far this year,
• to learn from the experiences of others for developing tasks for the other two formats yet to be used and
• to use comments from the Audit process from VCAA, to refine their SAC tasks.
When you register below you will be asked to complete a table on the formats of the assessment tasks that you have completed so far.
Resources from the PD
- Questions for the groups on the Motion in 2D and Fields Areas of Study which participants had already done and questions on Electricity Generation and Unit 4 AoS 1 which most participants were yet to do or design.
- A short Powerpoint (5 slides) on the key pointers for each format,
- A Spreadsheet of Performance Descriptors for the Areas of Study and the skills of Communication, Data Analysis and Arguments and Conclusions, along with information on constructing a rubric for an assessment task from the worksheets in the spreadsheet.
- Check lists for each format Vicphysics has prepared these to assist teachers in thinking of the aspects of each type of assessment task. The check lists are not intended to be exhaustive, nor authoritative, but more a guide to the aspects worth considering when designing an assessment task or evaluating commercial tasks or those of other teachers.
- Notes on Comparing and Analysing formats for all AOS These are the notes from the groups who used the ‘Comparing’ and ‘Analysing’ formats for the Areas of Study in Unit 3 and from the groups who plan to use the formats for Unit 4 Area of study 1.
There were quite a lot of useful ideas raised during the discussion.
